The 2021 Cadillac XT5 combines a fairly conservative silhouette with typical Cadillac styling at the front and rear to produce a compact crossover that stands out in a crowd without being polarizing. The conventional shape delivers all the usable practicality buyers demand of crossovers but the front and rear of the XT5 quickly remind you this is something a little more special than the run-of-the-mill.
Anyone familiar with current GM product lines will recognize the way the trim levels stack up with the 2021 XT5. As usual, there are three different trim levels with only the entry-level model having front-wheel-drive in its standard form. Although the entry-level XT5 Luxury comes standard with front-wheel-drive you’ll find that AWD is available if you want it, but the other two trim levels come standard with AWD.
What does separate the XT5 from a lot of other compact crossover rivals is the fact there’s more than one powerplant available. The standard engine in the Luxury and Premium Luxury models is the excellent 2.0-litre turbo-four that puts out 235 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, while the XT5 Sport comes with a 3.6-litre V-6 with 310 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque that’s also available as an option for the Premium Luxury trim level. All versions send their power to the wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.
While base versions of many compact SUVs are designed for fleet buyers and can be found lacking when it comes to standard features, there’s none of that here with the entry-level XT5 Luxury which really does live up to its name. Standard features in this supposedly ‘base’ model include 18-inch Multi-Spoke alloy wheels, active aero shutters, automatic on/off headlights, a premium Bose 8-speaker audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a top-notch infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Premium Luxury models add extra standard features such as real leather upholstery, a large moonroof, a hands-free power liftgate, and wireless phone charging. A lot of the XT5 Sport model’s specification is the same as the Premium Luxury, but Sport versions get the V-6 engine as part of standard specification as well as a healthy dose of sporty styling cues such as 20-inch 12-spoke alloys with a Pearl Nickel finish.
Inside the XT5 you’ll find a spacious, comfortable, high-tech, high-quality interior that more than lives up to the prestigious badge, and there’s plenty of power seat adjustment to get everything just right for even the longest of journeys. A nice feature inside the XT5 is a second-row that can slide forwards to create more cargo space in the back, or alternatively, it can be slid backward to give more legroom when required.
The 2021 Cadillac XT5 is a luxury model that appeals to a wide range of budgets without ever compromising its prestige status. Top-level versions of the compact Caddy are incredibly opulent and can be further enhanced with options such as the Platinum Package, but the entry-level XT5 Luxury is a model that delivers true luxury at an affordable price.
