With the introduction of a more affordable turbo-four option in the lineup for the 2021 model year, the XT6 is now within reach of more potential buyers than ever before. Although it’s now available from a new lower starting price no compromise has been made in terms of quality, comfort, luxury, or prestige. It takes a serious vehicle to live up to this auspicious badge and the 2021 Cadillac XT6 is very much a serious vehicle in every way that matters.
The turbo-four engine that’s new this year is a 2.0-litre unit that produces 237 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, and you’ll find it as the standard powerplant in the entry-level XT6 Luxury. If you opt for the XT6 Premium Luxury or XT6 Sport instead, which are joint range-topping models costing exactly the same as each other, you’ll then be treated to a bigger, more powerful V-6 instead.
XT6 models equipped with the 3.6-litre V-6 get 310 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque to play with, which is sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission which is the same as it is with the entry-level Luxury model. Unlike other Cadillac SUVs in the range, there’s no two-wheel-drive option here as both engines and all trim levels are standard AWD. When properly equipped, the 2021 XT6 with the V-6 engine can tow up to a maximum of 4,000 pounds.
Although it technically falls into the realm of midsize crossover SUVs, when you get inside the cabin of the XT6 you could easily be forgiven for thinking you’re in a full-size SUV instead. All the comfort, quality, and luxury you’d expect from a brand as premium as Cadillac is present inside this impressive cabin, but while some three-row midsize offerings struggle for space there’s room to spare inside the XT6.
Even with all three rows of seats in place and in use, there’s a useful 12.6 cu.-ft. of cargo volume in the back of the XT6, and if the third row is folded away that grows to 43.1 cu.-ft. Front seat passengers get 41.2 inches of legroom while those in the second row get a generous 39.1 inches.
Most of us expect large SUVs to be pretty safe due to their obvious size and bulk, but sometimes they fall well short in those all-important crash tests. That’s not the case here, however, as the 2021 Cadillac XT6 gets a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA and that extremely coveted Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS.
All versions of the XT6 come standard with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, LED daytime running lights, and parking sensors, while blind-spot monitors, automatic parking assistance, a surround-view camera system, adaptive cruise control, and even night-vision cameras are available with higher trim levels.
The 2021 Cadillac XT6 delivers big-time in every way you could wish for from a three-row luxury midsize crossover, and with the introduction of the turbo-four version, it’s now accessible to even more potential buyers than it was before.
