There are big SUVs, luxurious SUVs, big luxurious SUVs, and then there’s the 2022 Cadillac Escalade. You can have all the European and Japanese rivals, but nothing really compares to the mighty Caddy when it comes to making a statement as you drive in cosseting luxury around Weyburn, Estevan, Carlyle, Radville and Regina. The Escalade has size, space, comfort, luxury, power and capability to spare, and it even has the very latest cutting-edge tech onboard with features such as Super Cruise.
There’s no need to worry about whether you want or need all-wheel-drive when it comes to choosing the Escalade trim level you want because Cadillac doesn’t offer a rear-drive version here in Canada. That means you have just five straightforward trim levels to select from which start with the “entry-level” Luxury trim and then go to the Premium Luxury, Sport, Premium Luxury Platinum and the top-of-the-range Sport Platinum. There’s no such thing as a basic 2022 Cadillac Escalade so it’s almost laughable to refer to the first trim level as “base,” “entry-level” or any other such inappropriate term.
The current Escalade is still a traditional SUV built on the kind of ladder-frame platform used for full-size pickup trucks, and it also follows the big truck blueprint of being offered with two quite different engine options. The majority of Escalades you’ll come across will have the standard engine under the hood which is a smooth, powerful gas-powered 6.2-litre V-8 that puts out a mighty 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. That pretty serious power and torque gets sent to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission which is as smooth as the engine itself. If you’re interested in having something a little different powering your new Escalade, the alternative is a 3.0-litre Duramax inline-six turbodiesel which provides the Escalade with 277 horsepower and the same 460 lb.-ft. of torque as the gas 6.2, and it comes mated to the same 10-speed automatic transmission.
The 2022 Escalade can tow up to a maximum of 3,719 kg (8,200 pounds) and models equipped with the V-8 engine can get from a standing start to 60 mph in just 6 seconds! Gas-powered versions of the Escalade are rated for fuel economy at 16.8 L/100 km in the city, 12.4 L/100 km on the highway and 14.8 L/100 km combined, but the diesel improves those numbers significantly to 12.0/8.9/10.6 L/100 km respectively.
If you can think of a feature a vehicle can have at the moment you’ll be able to find it somewhere in the 2022 Cadillac Escalade lineup. In fact, some features may even be completely new to you such as Super Cruise which is a driver-assistance system that brings hands-free freeway driving to the Cadillac as long as the driver is focused on the road.
As an example of how much luxury is on offer here, even the mid-range Sport version of the 2022 Escalade comes with Mulan leather upholstery, an ionizer air cleaner, a panoramic sunroof, an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, magnetic dampers, a Trailering Integration package, and a raft of the very latest active safety tech. Go even higher and you’re then into the realms of Opus semi-aniline leather upholstery, 16-way power front seats with a massage function, a 36-speaker AKG audio system, soft-close doors, and an air suspension system with selectable modes. That’s not the end of it though as you can go even further by adding the likes of an industry-first OLED curved screen that has twice the resolution of a 4K TV and deep blacks that mean you don’t need a hood over it to see it in the daylight.
If you want a massive SUV that can accommodate up to seven people in the most outrageous levels of comfort and luxury but will still turn heads wherever you go, look no further than a 2022 Cadillac Escalade.
