You can apply words like stylish, comfortable, luxurious, opulent, prestigious, classy, and premium to any new Cadillac, but the 2023 LYRIQ will be the first Cadillac to also be able to claim to be “all-electric” too. The all-new 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ is considerably more than just another new addition to the Cadillac range; this is a model that will deliver the first evidence of what is now going to be the future for this illustrious luxury brand.
Cadillac has taken its time announcing its first-ever all-electric model, and the fact this first Cadillac EV is an SUV shows that waiting a while has probably been the correct decision. And don’t think for a moment that this is going to be an existing Cadillac SUV platform that’s been tweaked and adapted to accommodate an all-electric powertrain because the LYRIQ really is a completely new model from the ground up.
Choosing not to be an early adopter of all-electric technology shows Cadillac has really thought long and hard about how to pitch this exciting new model in the market, and it may come as a surprise to some that this five-seat crossover SUV is set to be more affordably priced than any of the current rivals. But perhaps the biggest news comes in the all-important area of the maximum driving range on a full charge of the LYRIQ’s battery, which is expected to be a very user-friendly 480 km or more. Throw in a big dose of stunning Cadillac styling and what inevitably promises to be an incredibly luxurious and hi-tech interior, and this all-new Cadillac EV certainly sounds like it could be ushering in an exciting new era for the luxury brand.
In these relatively early days of electric vehicles, it’s difficult for designers to get a handle on how the car-buying public is going to come down as far as styling is concerned. Will buyers go for radical, futuristic designs or will they prefer their EVs to look a lot like vehicles with internal combustion engines? One important styling decision comes with the front grille as electric vehicles don’t need a grille as they don’t have an engine that needs cooling. With the LYRIQ, Cadillac has chosen to go with a crest-shaped “grille” stitched by lights onto the front fascia which illuminates differently as the driver approaches or walks away from the vehicle.
The LYRIQ is, without doubt, an incredibly modern-looking vehicle that’s bound to get buyers excited when it lands in showrooms, but it’s also conventional enough to avoid being alienating. It doesn’t shout that it’s something different or odd, but it does shout style, presence, and charisma.
Powering the LYRIQ will be an electric powertrain featuring a 100-kWh battery pack situated in the vehicle’s floor between the axles, and this will help the integrated EV platform deliver a low centre of gravity and a perfect 50/50 weight distribution for excellent handling. To begin with, a single motor will be employed to drive the rear wheels and deliver that driving range on a full charge of more than 480 km. The LYRIQ’s EV powertrain will also deliver a very lively 340 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque, but the Cadillac will eventually be offered with dual motors, all-wheel-drive, and even more power.
There will be three ways of charging the LYRIQ, which will be classed as Basic, fast and Super-Fast. Basic will be from a 120-volt domestic supply that will deliver around 5.5 km of range per hour of charging. Fast will be from a 240-volt supply such as a dedicated charger at your home, work, or a public charging station, and this should get you 83 km of range per charging hour. And if you have access to a Super-Fast DC charger, GM estimates that you’ll be able to get around 122 km of range into your LYRIQ in just 10 minutes of charging time.
